Laveno site, Italy to shut on 26 September

Post by Simon Kay »

The Laveno site, just next to the Icaro factory and a place where many pilots come and visit, will not be accesible from Friday 26th Sep 2003, due to the closure of the cable way. At the moment the situation is a little uncertain, with a deal being hammered out between the private company that owns it and the local councils. In fact, the license for the cable way has expired (after 40 years) and the entire system needs to be replaced. That means money, and so there's lot's of discussion. Maybe nothing will happen.

Obviously as pilots we are interested parties. If you've ever been to Laveno (try http://www.dclaveno.com/IL_VOLO_LIBERO_ ... nglish.htm for information if you haven't) then why not give us a hand and send an email to sign onto the petition with the local council. All you need to do is:

Send the email to: prolocolavenomombello@inwind.it
Cut and paste this Italian text into the Subject box: SALVIAMO LA FUNIVIA del LAGO MAGGIORE
Put your name and address in the Message Text. Note: if you are a foreign pilot, this will be important since a strong justification for the maintenance of the cableway is tourism.

Thanks
Simon

Italian sites

Post by Simon Kay »

Hi James

Sites are not very well indicated or "managed" like in France, for example. I don't know of a central site guide, but I think the most appropriate place to start is http://www.fivl.it/club.html where you will find links to various clubs, often with a web site. A lot in Italian, of course, but you've got an interpreter...

I was surprised when a few years ago I made small tour of Umbria (Monte Cucco etc.) how low key it was. Even though it was not a bad time of year (July), Cucco just had a few German pilots and three or four locals. Here at Laveno we get 50 or 60 pilots on a standard weekend (well, when the cable way was open - closed last weekend). Annecy (France) would get 100's, and Cucco is miles better IMHO.

Lveno cable car and flying site open in 2004

Post by winDfried »

Hi Hanggliding community,
I was in laveno this Year 2004 in August.
The cable car was running, transport of Hanggliders no problem,
flying a joy due the beauty of the area.
There are more nice takeoff areas around the Lago maggiore (Links in postings above).
The weather however is not always reliable...
Regards, W.

Hello ,

this is just to inform that the cable way in Laveno is open.

I fly usually in the "Lecco" area anyway, and if You are around Milan You need just a 40/50 minutes of car to reach the site. There are two clubs: one of them based in Suello ("Scurbatt") and the other one on the shore of the Pusiano lake ("Cornizzolo in Volo") Both use as takeoff area the Cornizzolo Mount ( 1000 mt) where there is plenty of smooth grass so no space problem at all!! Shuttle are provided every day because no private car are admitted on the road of Cornizzolo.

Ciao
