Chuck Yeager
What a pilot, from my home state of West Virginia. I grew up 30 miles NE of where Chuck grew up. His passing is truly the end of an era. Bacil Dickert

Highly recommend reading the "Right Stuff" by Tom Wolfe (The movie is pretty cheesy, but is good for a few laughs and has a bit of cult following)... for sure give Yeagers autobiography a read.
Given the aircraft this guy flew it was amazing he made this far. A truely long and amazing carrier.
I was recently playing some new music from an old timer named Steve Earle, on the his latest release, there is a tribute to "Chuck".... The "Fastest Man Alive".... kind of cool.

Always heard the story of him visiting Charleston at some point after his sound barrier fame in one of his military jets. Either on arrival or departure he allegedly flew the jet under the bridges over the Kanawha in downtown Charleston. Pretty wild.Xcanytime wrote:What a pilot, from my home state of West Virginia. Re: Chuck Yeager
Yeah in the summer of 1948 he flew a Lockheed F80 Shooting Star into what is now Yeager Airport, I think to visit his hometown of Hamlin. Upon departure to head back to Wright Field, he flew under the South Side Bridge, giving all the boats on the Kanawha River quite a wakeup call. No biggie to him, since he chased 109s and 190s down to the deck in dogfights over Europe in 1944. He kept pretty mum about it, but the local paper ran a story about it some years back, quoting an eyewitness who was on the river when it happened. Cool as the other side of the pillow. Re: Chuck Yeager
Good article on Chuck written by none other than Homer Hickam, author of "The Rocket Boys", and portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie "October Sky", which was based on the book. Bacil
