<r>I was doing this type of flying mid 80's with my WW Harrier 177 at Marina Beach.
I had the same cacoon harness and glider not changed in 40 years.

This is not ground skimming, it's wind shadow wave flying..
Every wave creates a wind shadow that one day will get you!

You will expect the lift and wind to be there, until it's not.
Then you will pound into the sand head on and swing through the control bar!
Then the worst is next as the nose of the glider comes down on your head and neck!!

Broken neck and paralization is the result.

It happened to me and I laid on the beach passed out for awhile.
When I awoke the glider was pressing the back of my head and neck into the sand nose down.
I was very lucky my helmet took the initial impact at the base of my scull.
I was also lucky I hit dry sand, not hard wet sand…

Lee Gardener, one of the best beach pilots of all time, told me I was very lucky.
Many others were not lucky enough to get a second chance.

I was one of the best beach pilots ever. It's not skill when you fly like this pilot,
it's gambling and the long odds are not in your favor. Just look at his 1st landing
about half way through the vid if you think I am just an old Fuddy Duddy who
wants to take all the fun away..

Long odds favor those who listen and don't repeat the same old mistakes.

Lee still flys and shares his wisdom, and dispite all my attempts to out fly Lee, it's
to no avail.. I just took more chances and that has limits…
It's not gambling if you learn from mistakes. Its gambling if you keep making them.

If you know your going to lose one day and keep doing it, that is stupidity..

If your close enough to the ground that your feet can drag then you better be upright
in your harness, especially if your downwind of moderate waves and surf.

But don't listen to me cause I am just an old Fuddy Duddy who likes to spoil the fun..ðÿ¤“

Para Gliders are even more vulnerable to this wind shadow effect close to the ground.
Soft sand is not soft enough..

Looks like this except on SAND..
