dynamic soar

Post by Jason Rogers »

Albatross have this sorted, they dynamic soar by exploiting the wind shear when consistant winds blow over water. Dive with tail wind into slower air, turn and climb into headwind, turn and repeat.

We can't do that, we're too big and don't retain energy well enough.

But,

If we could seperate our lifting surfaces so that one was in the faster air and one in the slower then we could extract energy from both.

Think of how a kite surfer works, they have a wing (aerofoil) in fast moving air, and a wing in slow moving water (hydrofoil). They use this to extract energy from the difference and produce forward motion.

Am I proposing flying a kite while hang gliding???

Maybe I am…

Do I know how to do that?

Not a clue…

Cheers Jason =:)
